People began settling in the Richmond area when a fort known as Fort Bend was built near the Brazos River during the 1820s. The town of Richmond was established in 1837 and became the county seat of the new Fort Bend County later that year. A courthouse, stores, a church and school were built in the town during the 1840s. Railroad tracks were built through Richmond in 1855, and the town became a shipping center for cotton from plantations in the area. Agriculture was a large part of the town’s economy until oil was produced in the county during the 1920s. The town’s population increased during the 1930s.
